Create a Personal Success Profile
Having your own unique brand cannot be overemphasized. Every company strives for this, and yet candidates generally present themselves much like a commodity.
If you want to win the job, that hiring manager has to see you as a unique person. This takes some time and thought. Don't just dust off the old resume and update it. When candidates do this they generally end up in a position they really don't want. In the end they settle or lower their standards.
With a little planning you don't have to settle. Going in and out of transition every two years or so isn't fun.
It is imperative to have a career plan.
There are many names for these plans. Ours is called Personal Success Profile. This is what defines success for you. This plan includes the basic skills and experiences, but goes much further; it requires you to CLEARLY list out the minimum requirements for you to accept a position, where you are able to compromise and identify your non-negotiable issues. It requires you to start thinking of yourself as a brand and how you add value.
