101 Job Search Tactics and Activites to Conduct an Effective Job Search

I’m boiling mad!

I’m offended.

Brad and I put in an effort that exceeds most experts in the job search space. Do we deserve grief and abuse for it?

A recent commenter on my last blog posting inferred that Brad and I publish “fluff” and DO NOT provide specific tactics, techniques, tips, tools, and methods to improve your job search. He inferred that we spout theory, but don’t offer practical advice.

This commenter had the audacity to suggest that Brad and I were in a game of playing bait and switch – which infers I sell you one thing (which I don’t have and then try to convince you to buy a more expensive item).

Brad and I make an extraordinary effort to offer FREE audio, tools, templates, samples, examples, illustrations, and other material that might cost you hundreds of dollars – we give it away. Yes – we do ask that you register on our site to receive these FREE items. Yes – we do send you on-going emails to share with you other products, services, new FREE items, and updates to our offerings.

We’re trying to make a living from our expertise – this is our business – it’s not our hobby. We offer our products and services to those individuals who have expressed an interest in our content and find it valuable. At no time have we EVER sent spam, or made inappropriate recommendations.

Maybe the commenter was just mad at me because I “called him out” or folks like him on conducting an INEFFECTIVE JOB SEARCH. Perhaps, he took the message too personal.

However, to respond to these comments, I’m going to start publishing 101 blog articles on job search tactics – might take me a while to do this. These job search tactics and activities will be specific, precise, executable, realistic, action-oriented, time-based, outcome driven, metric capable, measurable, and achievable.

Then, I’m going to put them all in a self-assessment for you to check off how well you’re doing against each one.

It’s not one particular tactic is absolutely critical – it’s the combination of doing all 101 job tactics or activities concurrently that adds up to something quite powerful.

So, like Bobby Flay on the Food Network, I’m throwing down a challenge to our entire job search community:

Offer your job search tactics up in a comment and I’ll let you know if it falls in the 101 or you’ve come up with something even I didn’t consider (as hard as that might be to accept) and I’ll feature your idea in an upcoming blog post.

Secondly, take the challenge of doing every one of the 101 job search tactics and then let us know if one or more contributed to you finding your next great opportunity.

    There are dozens of questions that are asked during the interview. Some of these questions are common while others depend upon the profile or CV of the interviewee. It is recommended that you go prepared with your personal profile so that while presenting it you don’t muddle there.

    Bubba:

    Say you do get a job what do we get for giving all the free help?

    You win a paycheck which is thousands a month. Barry and I have worked thirty years to have this knowledge. Ever get a lot of free legal advise, or medical care or your taxes done for free.

    If you don’t get a job you will have the satisfaction of knowing you are doing everything right. You will have the satisfaction of knowing it is not you, your background, your experience or your job search. You will have the satisfaction of getting more interviews and at-bats, which it takes to get that job.

    Finally, your comment implies you would have gotten a job without our help and 101 tactics. I seriously doubt that, but I realize it is possible.

    The big question is “How is your search going so far?” If you reply “great” then don’t change. Why mess with something that is working. If you reply “Not as well as I would like” then I don’t see what you have to lose. You can only gain. And when you gain, since this how we make a living (do you work for free) what will you do for us in return?

    I thought good networking is about giving first and then getting. I think Barry and I give an extraordinary amount of free stuff. Can you find anyone that gives this much for free?

    Great challenge!!! I like your attitude… I think some job seekers believe the internet can do the search for them… like there is a magical answer hidden on there somewhere… no ppl you STILL HAVE TO DO YOUR OWN HOMEWORK & USE YOUR OWN BRAIN!!!!!

    I might suggest that your website not take so long to load. I attempted to look at two of you discussions and closed them before loading because I am rather impatient using a broadband connection.

    Just an FYI. We constantly check the speed of our site. It is consistently in the 99% for speed. Anything can happen at a specific moment including your connection could be overloaded or our site could be overloaded with too many hits at any one moment in time.
    Over all our site loads very fast.

    Some people just do not get it….they want to blame someone else for their inability or laziness when it comes to job search. That or maybe the person was burned by a agency or vendor or recruiter…I will look forward to your blog posts with this 101 job search challenge because there might be ideas I haven’t thought about using…and recharge my own search…I also think people do not want to admit that they are not doing everything they can.

    Hopefully some of the topics will be 1) Using Social Media sites like twitter, facebook, plaxo, zoominfo, linkedin 2) How to be pro-active at a networking function ( or what type of networking meeting to attend) 3) Talk about join professional organization within your industry….
